BAFTAs 2018: 7 Ups & 6 Downs
2. Guillermo Del Toro Wins Best Director
Guillermo del Toro continued to solidify his position as the Best Director Oscar frontrunner by winning the equivalent BAFTA, after many months ago it seemed likely that Christopher Nolan would probably be taking the gong home. Oh, how things change.
The director gave an impassioned acceptance speech where he paid tribute to his influences such as Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel and Mary Shelley, and closed with, "sometimes to talk about monsters we need to fabricate monsters of our own."
Considering how The Shape of Water isn't your typical "awards movie" by any means, it's great to see a director of del Toro's under-appreciated talent scoring the biggest awards in the business. The Oscar's basically a lock at this point.
