BAFTAs 2019: 6 Ups & 8 Downs
1. Thelma Schoonmaker's Incredible BAFTA Fellowship Speech
The show concluded with veteran editor Thelma Schoonmaker receiving a BAFTA Fellowship award, the highest honour that the organisation bestows.
Schoonmaker is of course Martin Scorsese's longtime editor, having received seven Oscar nominations over her 50+ year career and winning on three occasions (for Raging Bull, The Aviator and The Departed).
A 79-year-old Schoonmaker took to the stage for a brief yet thoroughly charming acceptance speech, where she extolled Scorsese's talents - who himself provided an introductory video message for Schoonmaker - while also paying tribute to her late husband, legendary filmmaker Michael Powell (who also received the award back in 1981).
Given that the Fellowship has been given to the likes of Sidney Poitier, Mel Brooks and Ridley Scott in recent years, she's certainly in fine company. And considering how often the role of film editors is downplayed during awards season, it was great to see arguably the greatest living editor getting a moment in the spotlight.
