BAFTAs 2019: 6 Ups & 8 Downs

4. Black Panther Wins Best Special Visual Effects

The undeniable awards clanger of the night was the utterly baffling Best Special Visual Effects win for Black Panther, which didn't just tout by far the most unremarkable VFX of the five nominated films, but was widely ridiculed by even its hardcore fans for its cheap third-act CGI.

Up against Avengers: Infinity War, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, First Man and Ready Player One, it was easily the weakest choice, and so one can only assume that the BAFTA voting body simply picked the film they liked the best rather than actually considering the craft involved.

Given that the likes of Annihilation and even Aquaman didn't make the final five, it's an utter embarrassment that such a visually rough film received such a prestigious award.
