BAFTAs 2019: 6 Ups & 8 Downs

5. Beast Wins Outstanding British Debut Over Apostasy

The Outstanding British Debut category is always one of the more interesting ones, typically shining a light on a number of acclaimed indie films which might've passed you by over the last year.

Though this year's winner, Beast, is certainly a fine film, it ultimately robbed a far more deserving winner in Daniel Kokotajlo's searing Jehovah's Witness drama Apostasy.

By far the best-reviewed of the nominees, Apostasy should've run away with the category, yet considering that Beast was also nominated for Outstanding British Film, its victory here wasn't terribly surprising (albeit still disappointing).
