BAFTAs 2021: 8 Ups & 7 Downs

4. Best Adapted Screenplay: The Father Beats Nomadland

Though Nomadland has been the season-long favourite to take home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, the BAFTAs raised the possibility that The Father could end up playing the spoiler with its triumph in the category.

While we can't entirely discount the fact that British films benefit from the "Brit boost" at the BAFTAs, this is certainly one case where BAFTA deserves credit for deviating from the norm and rewarding one of the most creative and heartbreaking scripts of the last year.

Though the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar isn't a free-for-all like Best Actress, The Father's win here definitely floats a question mark over how firmly Nomadland has it locked down. Either way, spreading the wealth is a good thing.
