BANNED! 5 Films The British Censors Don't Want You To See

2. Grotesque (2009)

Grotesque1 A nice young couple are on their first date when they get cruelly snatched up by a psychopathic killer. They wake up to find themselves in some sort of torture dungeon. The madman rapes them both, but this act of depravity is not enough so we get treated to scenes of dismemberment, disembowelment, genital mutilation and all round vicious torture. The sadistic killer must be a medical man of some sort, because he administers treatment to the couple throughout the film in order to prolong their lives and torture them as much as possible. So altogether, Grotesque is a gruelling Torture Porn marathon and the BBFC banned it outright for its sins. The board said that unlike other torture epics such as the Saw and Hostel franchises, Grotesque possessed minimal character development as well as minor narrative development. It exists only as a film to shock and awe viewers with extreme acts of torture and violence. Therefore, it cannot be judged to have artistic merit and exists solely for wallowing in sadism for sadism's sake. The film's writer and director was delighted with Grotesque's banned status in the UK. Apparently he made the film purely to disgust people and it succeeded in disgusting the BBFC, which is the response he wanted all along.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
