Barbie Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

5. It's The 2023's Funniest Movie

Much like the titular star, the Barbie movie is something that struggles to fit into a box. But if it had to be classified as one thing, Barbie is a comedy, above all else. The reason why is simple - it's absolutely hilarious.

Interestingly, it's not Barbie's quantity of jokes that make it funny, but how diverse the humour is. It boasts a beautiful mixture of well-written jokes, silly puns, deliberately dumb one-liners, and inventive visual nods.

Although some wisecracks are groan-inducing and cheesy, they still work, since the film counterbalances them with material that teeters on crude. (Like how the characters keeps referencing how nobody bought the Midge doll because she's pregnant.)

The depravation gags are on full-swing, since the film belittles itself, Mattel, consumers, toys, and Margot Robbie's casting. (It even pokes fun at The Snyder Cut of the Justice League!)

When a joke doesn't work, it doesn't have time to fall flat, since the scenes move on quickly, stopping the movie from losing momentum. Humour may be highly subjective, but it's challenging not to giggle at Barbie's vast versatility in its comedy.
