Batman 2018 Movie: 6 Influential Storylines We Want To See

4. Batman Beyond

On paper, Batman Beyond sounded like the sort of gimmick show that was released purely as a way of selling a whole new line of merchandise after the toy buying public had grown tired of the regular characters. In reality, it was a far more complex, rewarding proposition than that.

Taking place in the same continuity as Batman: The Animated Series, Beyond moves the timeline forward to 2039 and shows us a reclusive, elderly Bruce Wayne who has been forced into retirement due to a heart attack. Gotham is now a sprawling megalopolis known as Neo-Gotham, and that€™s where we meet Terry McGinnis, a 17-year old who stumbles across the secrets of Wayne Manor. After his father is killed, Terry Convinces Bruce to let him adopt the Batman identity, with the elder man acting as his support network.

Batman Beyond would be a risk to take for Warner and DC to make just yet, especially as sidelining Affleck€™s Bruce Wayne in favour of a much younger character would definitely upset more than a few people. There€™s also the practical side of either recasting Wayne as an older man or ageing Affleck with prosthetics to consider, although the tech-noir aesthetic of Neo-Gotham would surely stun onscreen. It€™s not likely to happen, but adapting Batman Beyond would certainly be one of the more interesting things the new DCU could do in the longterm.
