Batman: 75 Greatest Ever Moments

14. Batman Vs Superman - The Dark Knight Returns

Years before Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill would (probably) face-off in Snyder's hotly-anticipated sequel to Man Of Steel, the superlative animated movie featured the most memorable face-off between two titans of comic book movies. And the best thing? Batman wins.

13. "Leaves A Calling Card..." - Batman Begins

Having saved Gotham from the clutches of Ra's al Ghul and joined forces with Commissioner Gordon, Batman meets with his new friend to discuss the latest villain in town: "Armed robbery, double homicide. Got a taste for the theatrical like you," he says, before adding, "Leaves a calling card." Gordon produces an evidence bag and reveals... a Joker card! Granted, this is a tiny moment tagged at the very end of Batman Begins, but boy was it awesome and oh man did it generate a lot of buzz. Even watching it now, years later, the scene still generates goosebumps.

12. Taking On Mr Freeze In Arkham City

City is rife with encounters, giving you everyone from a kitana-wielding showdown with Clayface to tracking down the likes of twisted-genius Hush and expert marksman Deadshot in quick succession. Victor Fries however was a different ballgame altogether, and turned out to just be straight up FUN. Being something of a cross between the Vulcan Raven fight from Metal Gear Solid and a good old fashioned cat €™n€™ mouse showdown, you baited Freeze and took him out using every takedown you€™d learned to that point in the game, with sick animations to boot.

11. The Stadium - The Dark Knight Rises

Probably the most exciting set-piece in The Dark Knight Rises comes when Bane and his army of followers detonate explosives beneath a stadium during an American football match, only to take to the field and execute a man in front of the crowds. Bane's voice has been much ridiculed in the wake of The Dark Knight Rises, but there's something hilariously self-aware about the moment where he says "What a lovely, lovely voice" with regards to the National Anthem singin' kid. It might just well be the funniest moment in Nolan's trilogy - either intentionally, or not at all.

10. The Joker's Reprieve - Batman #1

Joker Initially Batman's greatest enemy was meant to die in his first appearance, robbing fans of the single best comic book foe in history, because Bill Finger had been concerned that allowing villains to return would make Batman look inept. Thankfully, he was over-ruled by editor Whitney Ellsworth, who told him to add another panel to the ending above, showing Joker to be alive.

9. The Death Of Rachel - The Dark Knight

The Joker's demented plan comes together when he tricks Batman into saving the wrong person. Killing off Bruce Wayne's long-time love interest Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight was an incredibly bold and brilliant move on the part of Christopher Nolan and his writers - not only did it cement the series as one that was willing to take risks and break down genres conventions (killing off a comic book love interest in such a fashion isn't considered normal Hollywood fare), but also showed audiences that everybody was at risk in the new, realistic Gotham City.

8. That Titan Joker Punch

"I'll never let you win"
Some were disappointed by the final showdown between Batman and a Titan-infused Joker, but to that we have two words: Exploding Fist. Titan was a serum that made subjects its into hulking Bane-like creatures, and after ingesting some to take you on, Joker€™s increased size was going to take some ingenuity to put down. So take that incendiary gel you€™ve been using to blow holes through cement walls and cover your glove in it, thwacking the creature straight in the face. How does your hand not get vaporised? Because you€™re the goddamn Batman.
