Batman: 75 Greatest Ever Moments

21. Robin RIP - A Death In The Family

Thanks to the merciless blood-thirst of fans, Robin was killed, taking away an unpopular character and deeply affecting Batman, in such a way that it added zest to the unthinkably waning property.

20. The Ending - The Dark Knight Rises

Say what you will about The Dark Knight Rises' ambiguous ending, but there's no denying that it's one of the most controversial and therefore most important points in Batman movie history - to dismiss it as anything other than landmark is to lose sight of its purpose. Sitting in a European cafe, then, Alfred spots Bruce Wayne - thought dead - sitting at a table across from him with Selina Kyle. Did it happen? Was it a dream? The debate rages on even today...

19. Suiting Up - Mask Of The Phantasm

The 1993 movie spin-off of the Animated Series presented two hugely important formative moments in Batman's crime fighting career: the first of which is a touching revelation of the price of his decision to fight crime, as he stands over his parents' grave and admits he "didn't count on being happy." The second, and arguably more important is the reveal of the first time Batman put the mask on, to the shock of Alfred, perfectly pitching Wayne's intent with the costume.

18. The Greatest Ever Opening Credits - Batman: The Animated Series

17. The Joker Kills Himself - The Dark Knight Returns

The brilliant animated movie is notable for a number of reasons, but one of its most enduring images comes when the Joker twists his already broken neck in order to incriminate Batman as his murderer, and blame him for the Clown Prince Of Crime's killing spree, perfectly showing his commitment to destroying the image of his adversary. Ledger might have gone a long way to making the Joker look self-destructive, but even he had nothing on this version of the Joker.

16. The Interrogation - The Dark Knight

One of the stand-out stands in The Dark Knight comes at the point when our hero and villain are left alone together in an enclosed space - and you could cut the tension with a knife (although Batman prefers to do it with his fists). Yes, the downright brilliant scene has the Joker confined to an interrogation room, unaware that the Batman is lurking in the shadows. What follows is a nail-biting scene in which the caped crusader crosses moral boundaries in attempt to reveal information about the locations of Rachel and Harvey Dent. The scene is made especially brilliant by the fact that the Joker is more giddy than terrified of his foe... he loves the chaos, after all. And when it's this good, so do we.

15. The End - The Killing Joke

Does Batman kill his nemesis? Has he lost it himself? All these questions and more were inspired by the greatest end to any Batman comic ever.
