Batman: Every Live-Action Alfred Pennyworth Ranked Worst To Best
8. Alan Napier - Batman (TV Series) & Batman: The Movie
There are few shows that encapsulate the phrase "a product of its time" better than the 1966 Batman tv series. Instead of toning down the silliness of the comics, the show cranked it up to 11.
What makes the campiness funnier is how Alan Napier's Alfred goes along with it without question. He rarely seems fazed by the daily absurdity he endures. This allows Alfred to function as a firm anchor for the show, taking matters seriously juxtaposing the rest of the cast chewing the scenery.
Because of how zany this adaptation is, it would be easy to depict Batman's butler as a helpless buffoon. On the contrary, this Alfred proves physically efficient, which is all the more impressive, considering Napier's age and seemingly frail frame. Throughout the series, he shows off his archery skills, drives the Batmobile, and impersonates Batman.
He also has the proud distinction of being the only person in live-action to have a sword fight with the Joker. How many butlers can put that on their CV?
Napier may not be the best Alfred but he's certainly the most fun to watch.
