Since Alfred has looked after Bruce Wayne longer than his own parents, it's obvious why the pair share a special bond. Even though this rapport is tantamount to how Bruce became a superhero, it hasn't really been shown in live-action.

But since the tv drama, Gotham, focuses on Bruce in his youth, we get to see his partnership with Alfred form and bloom over the course of several years. Because Bruce is young and fragile, Sean Pertwee's Alfred takes the driver's seat in the relationship for once.

Instead of acting like a surrogate parent from the beginning, this Alfred is a hardened Special Air veteran, who's forced to become Bruce's full-time carer. He's used to solving problems with his fists or a gun but slowly takes learns to take on a more gentile approach, knowing Bruce is in desperate need of a fatherly figure.

Even though it could be jarring to some viewers to see Alfred kicking ass, Pertwee finds a perfect balance with the character. Whether he's embracing Bruce, making tea, or beating the crap out of assassins, you totally buy this is the man who shaped Batman.
