Batman: Every Live-Action Alfred Pennyworth Ranked Worst To Best
4. Andy Serkis - The Batman
Movie fans were overjoyed when it was announced Andy Serkis would portray Alfred in Matt Reeves' The Batman. His performances as Gollum, King Kong, and Caesar prove the mo-cap extraordinaire loses himself in his roles like nobody else. As a result, everyone was excited to see what Serkis was going to pull out of the bag while portraying Batman's second-in-command.
Unlike previous versions, this Alfred doesn't rattle off heavy-handed monologues or exposition-dumps every five minutes. Because Serkis is such a physical actor, he can convey a lot while saying very little. During the hospital sequence, he gives one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the movie without saying anything. Because this film portrays Alfred and Bruce in a more antagonistic relationship, Serkis portrays him with an inner conflict since he tries to be protect his surrogate son but is forced to keep his distance.
Sadly, Serkis' performance could've been better... if he was in the movie more. Despite the fact The Batman clocks in at three hours, Alfred's mostly absent. In fact, he doesn't appear within the last hour. If we got more time to explore Serkis' portrayal of the character, there is no question his version of Alfred would be regarded higher.
