Batman & Robin: 10 Reasons It's Criminally Underrated

6. Feminist Themes

3 Thinking about women and feminism in Batman lead me to the surprisingly realization that out of the Batman movies, Batman and Robin is one of the most feminist-friendly movies, if not the most so. This comes from the simple fact that this movie has more than one female character. While Bruce Wayne€™s girlfriend is so dull she hardly is worth mentioning and Gossip Gerty is best left forgotten, they at least make a dent in the great gender inequality in Gotham. Main character-wise, we had Poison Ivy, who could be seen as a sign of sexual empowerment. If that is too much of a leap, we have Batgirl, who is the only main female character in a Batman movie to not have a major love plot line focused around her character. Sure, Robin had a thing for her, but it wasn€™t necessary for the plot. She even saves both our heroes€™ lives and manages not to be a damsel in distress. Batgirl is probably the biggest triumph and her possible downfall of being too sexualized, such as in the scene in which she first dons the suit which is a montage of ass, crotch and boob shots, is undone by the fact that the same shots were applied to Batman and Robin at the beginning of the movie. In this way, Batman and Robin has a strange sort of equality. She even comes out of it with a little more dignity. At least her suit didn€™t have bat-nipples.
