Batman V Superman: 10 Reasons It's Not As Bad As The Critics Are Saying

10. That Opening Scene Deserves More Credit

The first big scene in Batman v Superman (after the credits have rolled) shows the final battle from Man of Steel - in which Superman's fight with Man of Steel causes billions of dollars worth of damage and countless deaths - from Bruce Wayne's perspective.

He arrives from Gotham via helicopter, jumps into a car, and races through the streets, trying to make sense of what is happening. After rescuing one of his employees and a young girl, Wayne Tower collapses... and Bruce stares at Superman, hatred rising.

As an action scene, this more than delivers the goods and makes for a fantastic opening set-piece. But the real genius underlying this sequence is that it addresses the criticisms faced by Man of Steel; it's the film's response to the collateral damage faced by the citizens of Metropolis, and in broaching this Batman v Superman introduces its best idea. It's also a really interesting and clever way to introduce Batman and connect the films.

The biggest problem is that Batman v Superman doesn't really follow through on the themes established here, but as an opening to a blockbuster - and it really is an original, thrilling and relevant opening - it's pretty great and deserves a lot more praise.
