10. Itll Be Nothing Like Gene Hackmans Luthor
Thanks both in part to Lex Luthors importance and Supermans paltry rogues gallery, the villain has appeared in plenty of Superman films already. To those who have never picked up a comic book, Gene Hackmans interpretation may be their image of who the character is. And while Hackmans performance was strong, the characterization of Luthor was not. Thankfully, Eisenberg makes it sound like that will be avoided this time. Eisenberg has said that his performance as well as his character are completely different from what Gene Hackman did. He cited the different tone of this film, stating that he doesnt think a movie like the original Superman could get made in todays world. He instead likens his Luthor to one rooted in real psychology, where his malice and neuroses can be diagnosed. He makes no mention of Kevin Spacey, and while his performance was one of the bright spots of Superman Returns, its probably for the best that we dont have another Luthor whos obsessed with cornering the property market.
