Regardless of whether he was morally in the right for killing Zod, Superman'sdecision to finish off his foe evoked a lot of controversy. Both the characters within the film and the real people watching it are calling for a less violent Superman this time around and DCwould be wise to listen to them.

Judging from the senate hearings, the character is clearly under a lot of scrutiny when the film starts. He's very much inthe public eye and isn't going to be getting away with executing criminals and ravaging entire cities in an effortto stop them. One of the core struggles that Superman faces is holding himself back. It's a calculated effort he makes so as not to go too far and Batman V Superman could go a long way to helping him find that balance of power. His line to Batman, "if I wanted it, you'd be dead already," certainly suggests that he's trying to hold himself back.

Having Superman adjust his actions in the wake of Zod would make a lot of people rest easier about how the character is handled while also providing an internal conflict for him to face. It would take a lot less for him to kill Lex Luthor, and it's likely going to be much more tempting to do so, therefore it's likely Batman V Superman is going to routinely put him to the test as to whetherhe can hold his strength back, and provide a potentially dynamic conflict as a result.
