Batman V Superman: 34 Easter Eggs & References You Must See

27. The Wizard Of Oz

Quite why there are THREE separate Wizard Of Oz references remains to be seen: presumably, Clark Kent being from Kansas and the subliminal mental health allegory was enough justification for Snyder and David S Goyer. In the first instance, Lex Luthor mentions the Emerald City when talking about his retrieval of Kryptonite; secondly Perry White refers to Clark clicking his heels and returning to Kansas; and finally when Doomsday is kicking Batman's ass, there's a very silly shot of Supes' feet sticking out of the rubble that is pure Wicked Witch of the East, The pop culture references are all over the place: Lex Luthor also brings out an Alice In Wonderland nod towards the end when he calls himself the White Rabbit. Basically, we're supposed to feel like we're being lead into a wondrous world of imagination, if you missed that. And as Diane Lane's kidnap plotline comes to an end, literally the worst line of the entire film is stolen from Ella Fitzgerald's "Every Time We Say Goodbye..." (and get this, the last part is changed to "YOU Die A Little" - oh, the fun they must have had when that was suggested.) So yeah, lots of odd pop culture references.
