4. Trying To Play Catch Up
Its a bold strategy to announce ten upcoming movies when your cinematic universe hasn't even been properly established, but DC and Warner Bros. seem confident in their approach, even when some of the titles feature lesser-known characters. However, one of the potential flaws in this model is that if one or more of your movies suffers from critical or commercial failure, the whole concept could end up dead in the water.
Take Universal's 'Classic Monsters Shared Universe'; the studio tacked on an epilogue to Dracula Untold that would help tie the character into their hastily-established continuity. However, the movie did unspectacular box office business and sits at 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the follow-up project (a reboot of The Mummy) has suffered from numerous script and director problems, with the studio now facing an uphill struggle to make it work.
While Marvel Studios plan one phase at a time, with The Avengers the studio's goal as far back as 2006, DC are instead rushing through the setup and throwing Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman into the mix at the same time without testing the waters first. While it will no doubt make a ton of money at the box office, if Dawn of Justice sucks then the entire DCCU will be viewed with huge skepticism from then on. Which leads us to the next point...
