The Rumour: After the film opens with the classic Batman origin, we jump ahead to Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne as he arrives in Metropolis and gets caught up in the Battle of Metropolis.

What It Means For The Movie: On one hand, it could be perceived as cynical that everything in the DC universe has to be tied back to Man Of Steel, but it’s definitely easier on the audience to have a streamlined, cinematic version of all the origins that fit together. It also makes Batman feel like an organic part of the world, as if he was lurking in the background the whole time.

This sort of backwards continuity building could become cumbersome quickly but it also stops the DC model from resembling Marvel’s. Rather than adding and adding until it becomes too much, DC is trying to expand on things that already exist in their world, such as the Battle Of Metropolis.

On top of the continuity construction, this detail helps to build the physical landscape of the DCCU’s United States. Zack Snyder has compared the distance between Metropolis and Gotham City to San Francisco and Oakland, explaining how the characters could hop back and forth during the movie. Their proximity and relationship makes the two cities feel authentic and explains how Bruce could have been there at such a coincidental moment.
