20. Will Batman And Superman Go Toe To Toe?

The internet's working title for the film since Snyder made the announcement at 2013 Comic-Con has been Batman vs Superman, and there's no avoiding the fact that fans do genuinely want to see Batman and Superman go toe to toe, which is about as grand as fan-favourite ideas come. It's been done a lot of times in the past in the comics, and rather tellingly Zack Snyder has been particularly vocal about his love for Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, which is the source material of the passage that actor Harry Lennix read at Comic-Con when the film was announced. Knowing how much that book is built around what a gritty, seasoned veteran Batman is and how new the Superman of Man Of Steel is, it's only logical that Batman will be taking him to task. From Batman's point of view, Superman is an irresponsible alien who stands for nothing; truth, justice, and the American way aren't exactly top of his agenda. Considering he traded his people for Earthlings, as an audience we know that Superman is supposed to be our protector; he's a little green still, sure, but he genuinely cares about humanity and feels his powers are his obligation to protect them. The destruction of Metropolis was collateral, but wholly necessary damage, because it was the only way to deal with Zod. But you have to suspect that it will be more difficult to convince Batman and the US government of that: all the Dark Knight is likely to see is a threat responsible for killing innocents, or at least who has the potential to do so.
