Batman Vs Superman: 7 Iconic Villain Roles That Prove Irons Is Miscast As Alfred

3. Rodrigo Borgias (The Borgias)

Playing one of the most corrupt popes in all of papal history would have to be a lot of fun for a very good actor and Irons certainly makes it seem that way in the series the Borgias. The series surrounds him with sex, assassination, corruption, religion, incest and deceit at every turn, for whenever Rodrigo is not causing trying to remove people from the game board, there's a good chance they are trying to remove him. Irons plays the patriarch of the Borgias as a man who genuinely believes in the righteousness of what he is doing: his service to his family is unquestionable, but when he almost dies at the hands of an assassination attempt, his faith is greatly shaken and he seeks retribution on those he suspects to have perpetrated the crimes. It was a shame the series ended when it did, as it would have been interesting to see where he would have gone from there. Apparently the series finale was going to see the complete disintegration of Rodrigo and everything he fought for in an epic storm. This makes Rodrigo the sort of slow burn performance towards villiany and vice, while it will be doubtful that Alfred will have the time or the capacity as a character to have any sort of real character arc.
