Batman vs. Superman: 8 Actors Who Could Play The Riddler
5. Jackie Earle Haley
Riddle us this: which three names appeared as one in the form of a nightmare, played by the voice of the greatest Riddler of all? You live to see another day if you answered Jackie Earle Haley, who stepped into Robert Englund's iconic Freddie Kruger role having already shown in The Watchmen that he could play delightfully dark, even grotesque anti-hero types. As Rorshach, Haley proved how seamlessly he is able to get under the skin of complex fan-favourite comic book characters, and the mask that played so much of a role in that character will also protect him from the over-familiarity that can make fans baulk at the suggestion of reusing comic book movie actors for other roles. And of course, if he can bring his best for Snyder once, he probably can do again. Bringing back this idea of darkness which a movie version of The Riddler is begging for, Haley's performances in Little Children, Watchmen and Shutter Island should make any casting director seriously consider his name, but check out his interviews on Rorshach's "complexity of the grey area" as well, or how he talks about his character Guerrero in Human Target for further indication of his worthiness. For the latter, he literally says "when he kinda tells you something, and it's threatening, you're wondering whether he's bluffing. There's something about this guy, you just don't wanna call him on his bluff". Now tell us that doesn't sound like the perfect brief for The Riddler...
