When he was first approached to play the role of Batman Ben Affleck was very reluctant. The character was still very fresh in the minds of movie goers and after the massive success of the Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale version it would certainly be a difficult act to follow. However it was a conversation with the film's director that convinced him playing the Dark Knight was the right thing to do. In an interview with Den of Geek Affleck said his mind was made up when Snyder told him Affleck's version of Batman would be "tired, weary and seasoned" with more similarities to Frank Miller's vision than anything that had come before it. Speaking of Frank Miller's work The Dark Knight Returns is the perfect place to start when looking at a "tired, weary and seasoned" version of Batman especially as he manages to go toe to toe with Superman in one of the greatest clashes in comic book history in those very pages.
