4. Batman Vs. Bane (The Dark Knight Rises)
Much was made of the central bout between Batman and Bane in TDKR and Nolan does not disappoint. After establishing Batman’s physical and emotional state of mind as well as Bane’s physical superiority, Nolan thrusts him into a fight he has no hope of winning and forces the viewer to watch.
The decision to completely remove the score from this scene was a stroke of genius as we really feel every thunderous blow that Bane lands. Hardy’s physical dominance is perfectly complemented by Bale’s weak attempts at recapturing past glories and, as the scene progresses, we fear more and more for his safety.
But it is not simply a physical confrontation, as Bane constantly taunts and goads Batman throughout, he makes it clear that he will always be one step ahead of him leading to a total physical and emotional battering the likes of which we had never seen before.
It’s just a shame the second fight was nowhere near as satisfying.
