5. The Joker’s Tape (The Dark Knight)
The Dark Knight contains some of the most intense sequences ever seen in a comic book movie and this is potentially the hardest one to watch.
After a Batman imposter is found hanging from a courthouse, a tape is released showing The Joker taunting the poor man in his final moments before threatening to kill someone every day until the real Batman comes forth.
It was already clear that Ledger’s Joker was going to me a much more disturbing version of the character but this was the scene that showed just how far he and Nolan were willing to go. Ledger is phenomenal as he revels in the terror he is instilling in this poor man and, as he turn the camera on himself to issue his threat, we are left in no doubt that Batman is most definitely the hero that Gotham needs right now.
Credit must also be given to Bale and Caine, whose look of disbelief and horror really sells the idea that this is a man who is going to turn everyone’s world upside down.
