In The Original

There's no real mention of Belle's backstory or how she came to be so different to the townspeople. She's just a freer spirit seeking more than this provincial life.

In The Remake

We get much more of a look at the tragedy of Belle's mother. When Beast invites her to use his enchanted book, she chooses to go to her Paris home, to the “crumbling, dusty attic” where her mother died after childbirth.

In a dark twist, it turns out that she contracted the plague and sent Maurice and Belle away so they wouldn't also contract the disease. Maurice kept this secret from her, but the magical trip to their home confirms it to Belle, who takes her mother's favourite possession, a glass rose. Which presumably she hopes isn't covered in plague germs...
