Beauty And The Beast Remake: 18 Major Changes Disney Made

18. Belle Is An Inventor

Beauty And The Beast
Disney

In The Original

Belle is a book worm, frequenting the library and generally being a bright spark, but that's about all we see of her intellect, which the townspeople shun her for as "weird".

In The Remake

She's still a bookworm, but there are some major changes. She doesn't go to the library as the only one in her town (after all, it never made sense that there'd be a library in a town where everyone counts reading as some sort of evil), instead getting her reading materials from a priest.

And more fundamentally different is the fact that she's an inventor - as her father was in the animated version - inventing a rudimentary washing machine at the start of the film. She's still shunned by her fellow townspeople, and again it comes down to her being literate and them being stoic and scared of knowledge and progress.
