Before Midnight: 10 Reasons It's One Of The Greatest Films Ever Made

8. Direction & Cinematography

Before Midnight The previous two films were sumptuously shot, and so it's no surprise that this one is also expertly assembled. The use of long takes that Linklater perfected in the last film is again stepped up this time; an opening take inside a car, in which Jesse and Celine playfully chat before this turns into an argument, is a stunningly-executed feat of sustained dialogue that is a testament to the commitment of the actors. Linklater's direction, meanwhile, is strong - aided by some once-again excellent cinematography - and the best thing that can perhaps be said about it is that it does not intrude upon the story or characters. The flourishes are judiciously chosen, yet never override what's taking place on screen.
