6. It Feels Completely Necessary
It's a testament to everything that takes place during Midnight that it manages to feel like a completely necessary film despite the fact that Sunset ended with Jesse and Celine seemingly starting their life together, which for many love stories is enough to put things to bed. Instead, Linklater mines a very different kind of material for this third film; if the first two were more optimistic and bunny-stunned in their approach to love, Midnight tackles a very different angle altogether, which helps to reflect the age of the characters and also bring something fresh to the table. Had this film simply been the couple acting loved-up for 100 minutes, we might not have been so kind to it (alright, we probably still would have loved it, but whatever...)
