In her second feature, writer-director Mary Bronstein gives voice to a mother (a tremendously engaging Rose Byrne) who suffers a mental breakdown due to the hardships suffered by her family, the results of which are as harrowing as they are surreal.
With Byrne front-and-centre in a career-changing performance, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You is an honest, awful, utterly compelling glimpse at a woman falling to pieces that's often hard to watch, yet impossible to look away from.
Often feeling like a bizarre acid trip, an unconventionally weird ride into the madness of sudden psychosis, Brontein's vision is also remarkably tender at times, and sports a final act that will surely leave even the most hardened of viewers deeply moved.
