18. Good Boy
Before Good Boy was released, audiences spent so long fretting about whether its adorable doggy Indy would survive that nobody really spared a thought for the human protagonist, Todd (Shane Jensen).
Todd spends the film suffering from a debilitating lung disease while being pursued by a supernatural force which only Indy can sense, and at the end of the movie Todd finally succumbs to his condition.
As Todd is dragged through the house into the basement, Indy races to save him, only for Todd to accept his fate and tell Indy that while he's a good dog, he can't rescue him.
The next morning, Todd's sister Vera (Arielle Friedman) arrives at the house to find her brother dead and Indy sat at the basement entrance. A devastated Vera calls Indy, and after a moment he goes to her.
Who among us expected this movie to be about a canine coping with the death of its owner, and its utter inability to save him? Devastating.
