20 Greatest Horror Movie Endings of the 2020s (So Far)
17. 28 Years Later
Now in fairness, the ending to 28 Years Later is absolutely one of the most divisive of any movie released these last few years - horror or otherwise - but it's also quite brilliant in its own way.
After young Spike (Alfie Williams) leaves the uninfected infant back at the village gate, he returns to the mainland, leaving a note to his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) vowing to return when he's ready.
28 days later, we see Spike being chased by a pack of the Infected when he's rescued by a now-adult Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell), who with his gang of tracksuit-wearing, Jimmy Savile-styled lackeys violently dispenses with the Infected, before introducing himself to Spike.
It's such a tonally jarring ending, what with the sloppy ultra-violence backed by a death metal cover of the Teletubbies' theme, that you're either likely to laugh your ass off at the sheer ballsy absurdity or just roll your eyes.
It was nothing if not an unforgettable setup for sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, that's for sure.
