20 Best Horror Movie Final Girls of the 2020s (So Far)

12. Deena Johnson - Fear Street

Deena Johnson (Kiana Madeira) is the protagonist of Leigh Janiak's epic Fear Street trilogy, and considering the traditional stature of both women of colour and LGBTQ+ characters in the horror genre, it sure is refreshing to see a member of both parties who makes it to the end in one piece.

But more than that, Deena is a gratifyingly complex character - some audiences found her brash and unlikeable in the early going, but that simply leaves a whole ton of room for growth.

The point here is that she's not the typical squeaky clean Final Girl, and we love her for that, even though she still fights heroically to save her ex Sam (Olivia Scott Welch) from the centuries-old curse hanging over Shadyside.

Deena remains a polarising girl in horror fandom for some of her messier decisions, but again, she's a breath of fresh air for being depicted as so thoroughly flawed and human.
