1. Housebound
Housebound is a friggin' delightful horror-comedy from New Zealand filmmaker Gerard Johnstone, who would later go on to make the M3GAN movies.
Way back in 2014, though, he arrived on the scene with this disarmingly charming romp about a woman (Morgana O'Reilly) who is sentenced to house arrest for eight months in an apparently haunted house.
Johnstone clearly has a ton of fun playing with the tropes of the haunted house movie and giddily subverting expectations, but never doubles down on the comedy at the expense of some genuine suspense and unease. It's a tricky juggling act, but he absolutely nails it.
And just when you think you know what Housebound is, it serves up some savage surprises to keep you on your toes.
Meanwhile Morgana O'Reilly's protagonist Kylie is a refreshingly coarse, rough-edged hero - but one we'll absolutely still root for - and Rima Te Wiata is equally fantastic as her mother Miriam.
