20 Awesome Horror Movies NOBODY Talks About
14. The Blackcoat's Daughter
Even though Osgood Perkins has become a certified household name in horror with his recent films Longlegs and The Monkey, it's surprising how few fans of these movies have pored back over his filmography and given some love to his brilliant 2015 debut The Blackcoat's Daughter.
This astonishingly confident, Lynchian psychological horror takes the seemingly familiar premise of two young girls being terrorised by supernatural shenanigans at a boarding school and makes it feel entirely anew.
That's in large part due to Perkins' superbly crafted low-key atmosphere and also his willingness to trust the audience to feel the movie rather than fixate on the logic of every ambiguous moment.
It's a challenging sit for those more accustomed to mainstream horror fare, for sure, but Perkins has never executed dread better than he does here, and the central performances from Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Boynton are beyond reproach.
Don't expect to get everything from it on a first viewing, but fans of slow-burn unease will surely want to revisit it again and again.
