2026 has been an excellent year for horror films so far, from genuine pop-culture phenomena like Obsession, Backrooms, and Resident Evil to indie bangers such as Sex and Teenage Death at Camp Miasma, Hokum, and Undertone.

Horror has always been a genre keen to showcase the uncanny, the horrifying, and the downright insane, and often these moments are so effective that they leave a permanent imprint on our collective psyches.

That's absolutely the case with these 20 recent horror movie scenes, each of which rattled us all with their creativity, their willingness to push the envelope, and their sheer shock factor.

Whether grotesque villains, brutal death scenes, or jaw-dropping twists, these completely bonkers moments from recent horror movies are sure to stick with anyone who witnessed them for the foreseeable future.

Regardless of how the rest of the movie turned out - and in some cases, it sure wasn't great - these moments at least left a mark, for better, worse, or weirder.

And so, it goes without saying that the rest of 2026 and beyond will need to go hard to out-WTF these wild moments...

20. AI Deepfakes - Scream 7

Scream 7 Stu

The Scream franchise has always had its finger on the pulse of Hollywood and general pop culture, so when numerous dead characters were confirmed to be returning in Scream 7, many speculated that they would be resurrected through AI deepfakes.

And indeed, this turned out to be true.

Sidney (Neve Campbell) spends much of the film being taunted by videos of her apparently still-alive original tormenter, Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard).

And in the third act, she races home to find a video message from "Stu," who suddenly morphs into various figures from Sid's past such as fellow killers Nancy Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) and Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), and also the beloved Dewey Riley (David Arquette).

There's no doubt at this point that there's tech tomfoolery at play, and moments later killer Marco (Ethan Embry) reveals himself while confirming that he was the tech whiz behind all the deepfakes.

Unfortunately any semblance of satire here is hugely undercooked, but above all else the AI deepfakes featured throughout the film are just obscenely goofy, compounding the many issues of a desperate sequel that struggles to justify its own existence.
