A bold, modern re-imagining of the classic 1930 movie of the same name, based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, 2022's All Quiet on the Western Front is a combat horror of brutal urgency.

Taking place in France during the early days of the First World War, the film follows young Paul Baumer (a breathtakingly shell-shocked Felix Kammerer), an idealistic soldier whose romantic dreams of becoming a war hero are shattered by the unexpectedly bleak reality of battle.

Rendered with awesome effects and towering set pieces, All Quiet on the Western Front speaks to the futility and cruelty of war to heartbreaking effect. It's a character study at heart, Paul's crushed spirit a vivid representation of how war does nothing but inflict pain and ruin lives.

Admittedly one of this list's heavier watches, All Quiet on the Western Front is nonetheless a timely and affecting vision, and proof that some remakes can work when they're tackled with real passion.
