Best/Worst Case For 15 Summer Movies (With Predictions)
11. Rocketman
Release Date: May31st
Last year's Bohemian Rhapsody was a major player during the Oscars, with Rami Malek taking home Most Outstanding Actor. Dexter Fletcher's Rocketman will look to emulate that success. Taron Egerton will add some flare wardrobe and bring a young Elton John to the big screen. These films are far from isolated, however, and there have been a slight rush of biopics in recent years covering artists ranging from Motley Crue to NWA.
Best Case: We've seen some truly powerhouse performances from actors in Taron Egerton's current position, such as Malek and Jamie Foxx, and he may just join them. Egerton delivers the best performance of his career and Rocketman is one of the best films of the year, with a profit against its $40 million budget and plenty of recognition come award season.
Worst Case: Completely botching these films is a seldom seen thing, but it has happened. Look no further 2017's All Eyez on Me, which covered the life of Tupac Shakur. If Fletcher and Egerton prove not to be a fit for this material, there will be nothing particularly memorable and we will have long forgotten Rocketman by the end of the summer.
Prediction: These films are largely satisfying for fans of the artists, enjoy generally positive reviews and at least break even at the box office. Rocketman will fall in line with most musician biopics. Take that as you will.
