20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)
19. Joker: Folie a Deux
Though Todd Phillips' Oscar-winning Joker was conceived as a standalone movie, a sequel announcement wasn't hugely surprising considering the first film's colossal $1 billion box office haul.
Joker: Folie à Deux finally released in 2024, and though few expected the sequel to fully replicate the success of its predecessor, it was probably a fair assumption it'd gross a modest $400-500 million.
But the follow-up made off with just $208 million by the end of its run - an absolutely disastrous result any way you slice it.
Considering the popularity of The Joker as a character and Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal in the previous film, this is an especially damning indictment of Phillips' sequel, which as a jukebox musical-drama that seems to harbour contempt for fans of the first movie, did everything in its power to alienate the mainstream.
If Phillips' plan was to ensure that nobody, least of all Warner Bros., would want a Joker 3, then he most certainly succeeded.
