Birds Of Prey: 10 Major New Details Revealed During The Press Tour
4. Black Canary Was Inspired By Injustice 2
With so much of Birds of Prey's marketing campaign focused on Harley Quinn, characters like Huntress and Black Canary have flown under the radar. It was only recently that a TV spot confirmed the latter will have her "Canary Cry" and actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell has now revealed a surprising source of inspiration for how that's portrayed on screen.
"I drew a lot of inspiration for the Canary Cry from the Black Canary in Injustice 2," she explained to ComicBook.com. "Yeah, even physically. But for me, I really wanted to make it very primal. That was part of it for me, because it's, it's not something she uses, you know, it's something she's trying to hide, and so to get to the point to rev herself up, it's coming from such a guttural point and a guttural place. I felt really powerful."
It's interesting that Smollett-Bell mentions Black Canary attempting to hide her abilities. Is she trying to avoid being used as a weapon by someone like Black Mask or does having superpowers in Gotham City risk putting you on certain Caped Crusader's radar?
Those are hopefully questions the movie will answer but fans of Injustice 2 are bound to be excited by her interpretation of the character being inspired by that video game. Black Canary has the potential to be a major player in the DCEU and getting her powers right is an important first step.
