After the trainwreck that was Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) had a lot of pressure on its back. The issue was not only that the Suicide Squad has been largely despised by critics and fans alike, but it also made practically no reference to the larger DC universe outside of the character's backgrounds, which made it feel like a very token attempt at cashing in on the current trend of superhero movie hype.

But against all odds, this beaver actually has a far more complicated backstory. Bernie has been a longtime staple of the Harley Quinn comics, serving as an animal assistant that she doesn't have to feed or worry about dying like her hyena pets.

Though Bernie does not serve a purpose in the film outside of being a fun little reference to the comics, it's a delight to see such care taken to ensure Harley's life in the film almost directly mirrors her comic counterpart - right down to the taxidermy animals.
