Birds Of Prey Trailer Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

6. The Diversity Agenda

Rosie Perez Birds Of Prey
Warner Bros.

Perhaps this is a slight stretch for the trailer itself and is maybe a point more pertinently addressed to the film as a whole, but it's great to see the diversity in the film's cast, even if the other characters are a little under-represented in there.

We get to see Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco and most interestingly Rosie Perez in their key roles (not to mention having director Cathy Yan behind the scenes). This move to broaden DC's casting is a great thing - and props to Margot Robbie, if it is indeed true she was a driving force in that agenda.

Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco and Ali Wong (who isn't really in the trailer) are all great, but Perez deserves special mention, because not only is she a POC, but she's also outside of what people might usually class as the traditional "bracket" for this sort of casting. Long may that sort of boundary destruction continue if it means more interesting talents are cast rather than people who are merely "young enough."
