At one point, we get to see a shirtless T'Challa and Killmonger fighting with traditional weaponry as the same council of Wakandan elders looks on.

What It Means

This is definitely a sanctioned battle, and could be a flash-back set before the events of Civil War (and T'Chaka's death), establishing the fact that the pair were rivals for consideration to be the next Black Panther

The fact that the battle takes place on Warrior Falls - where Black Panther is crowned officially - also seems to fit that suggestion. And of course, Killmonger has traditionally been presented as a leadership rival to T'Challa, which could see him exiled (and forced to work with his enemies?)
