Black Widow Stand-Alone: 10 Things Marvel Must Do
7. Reveal What Happened In Budapest
"This is just like Budapest."
"You and I remember Budapest very differently."
It might well have been a throwaway gag, but that exchange between Hawkeye and Black Widow in The Avengers hints at a tantalising shared past between the two characters.
Many would be happy just to discover what their mission was in the Hungarian capital back in the day, and what went so terribly wrong that Natasha felt the need to compare it to New York's invasion by aliens?
But does Barton's confused rebuttal hint at something more than a tough fight? Perhaps their memories are different because they've been altered, which wouldn't exactly be a first for S.H.I.E.L.D., or a Whedon-scripted narrative device involving a distant location.
It could be that Natasha's past identity is wrapped up in what happened in Budapest.
