There's a good chance you don't know the outcome of this story, and Lee takes terrific advantage of that during the movie's numerous suspense sequences.

The centrepiece of the film sees Flip undercover as he prepares to be inducted into the Klan, and the sustained sequence is a masterpiece of understated tension.

As suspicion mounts and Flip gets closer to having his ruse blown, it's a genuinely nerve-shredding experience, especially with the Klan's obvious penchant for violence (despite their early claims to being non-violent).

Because Flip and Ron are effortlessly likeable, it's easy to get invested in their safety and feel anxious when they get a little too close to being rumbled.
