6. It's Surprisingly Hilarious & Well-Written

There wasn't too much of an indication pre-release that Blood Father was going to be funny, and yet, it's arguably one of the most hilarious films of the year so far.

From an outrageous opening sight of Lydia buying bullets and only being ID'd for the pack of smokes she also wants to buy, through to Gibson's cantankerous one-liners and his amusing dynamic with his alcohol sponsor (played by William H. Macy), there's a surprising amount to laugh at here.

Hell, one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie occurs when John first has to defend Lydia from her attackers, and his grumpy, violent assault on the assailants nails the dark humour sweet spot perfectly.
