Boy Erased Trailer Reaction: 5 Ups & 1 Down

Ups...

5. The Tone

Boy Erased
Focus Features

In spite of Boy Erased being a coming-of-age drama, the trailer highlights that the movie has gone for a natural and realistic tone, instead of succumbing to the typical Hollywood tradition of turning every coming-of-age story into a Young Adult piece.

Nowhere in the trailer do we hear a voice-over from our troubled protagonist, nor is the film presented as a story about overcoming your external demons. Instead, Edgerton appears to have gone for a more naturalistic approach in his screenplay, pulling form the real-life source material and telling the story as it is, with no glamorisations or tropes to sell tickets. Moreover, the cinematography and direction (we'll get to that later) all boast a more adult tone - as does the narrative.

The whole project appears to be presented in a realistic way, and its tone is certainly more akin to that of Indie films.
