Boy Erased Trailer Reaction: 5 Ups & 1 Down

1. The Emotional Conflict

A movie of this nature requires conflict above all else - both in the script and in the actor's performances - and if this trailer is anything to go by, then Boy Erased has nailed it on all accounts.

It's clear from the very first shot of Garrard that the film's protagonist is struggling internally, caught between the life that his family wants him to lead, and the life that he wants for himself. As mentioned earlier, Hedges looks set to deliver an exceptional performance, which could be career-defining for the young actor.

And it's not just Garrard who's conflicted. His mother Nancy is full of conflict. She struggles with her faith and her son and ultimately has to choose which one is more important to her. Edgerton's script seemingly highlights this conflict beautifully through the use of subtext.
