Boy Erased Trailer Reaction: 5 Ups & 1 Down

2. Joel Edgerton's Direction

This isn't Joel Egerton's first rodeo as director. The actor made his directorial debut in 2015's The Gift, which was a psychological horror film that he also wrote and produced.

As you can guess from the premise, Boy Erased is a far cry from The Gift, but if you were worried that Edgerton might not have been the best director for Boy Erased given his history of genre pieces, then this trailer will put your mind at ease. The glimpses we get of his work on the film suggest that he was the right man for the job.

Boy Erased is visual, but it's not particularly eye-catching. It appears to have a more subdued look, which is perfect for the material, as it's not meant to be a glossy film. Moreover, Edgerton appears to have employed several depth of field shots to aid in conveying the raw emotion - the exposure - that Garrard is experiencing throughout the film, which will complement the narrative beautifully.
